Napoleon Bonaparte, or Napoleon I, was born August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio. General in the armies of the First French Republic, he managed to take over power in 1799 by the Coup of 18 Brumaire and became First Consul. Then he was crowned Emperor December 2, 1804 by Pope Pius VII. Napoleon began a broad military campaign to break coalitions funded by the Kingdom of Great Britain. He led the French armies from Italy to the Nile, from Austria to Prussia and Poland. His many victories dislocated coalitions and allowed him to enlarge French territory and govern most of continental Europe by placing members of his family on the thrones of several kingdoms. He even became president of the Italian Republic in 1802, mediator of the Swiss Confederation in 1803 and protector of the Confederation of the Rhine in 1806. Forced to abdicate in 1814 after the capture of Paris by the forces of a broad European coalition, and retreated to the island of Elba, he attempted to regain power in France during the episode of the Hundred Days in 1815. But the defeat of Waterloo ended the Napoleonic Empire and ensured restoration the Bourbon dynasty. He died in exile on St. Helena in the custody of the British on May 5, 1821. Already during his lifetime Napoleon was surrounded by a golden legend and a black legend. He owed his reputation to his military skill, haloed by numerous victories, and remarkable political career, but also his despotic and highly centralized regime, and his ferocious ambition which led him to deadly wars of aggression with hundreds of thousands dead and wounded, military as well as civilian, throughout Europe.
